The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office responded to an incident in which a minor who had used the substance known as “synthetic marijuana” physically assaulted two of his family members.
“He was under the influence, he physically assaulted his brother and sister, and they both wanted to file charges,” said Sheriff Tom Schmerber. “He had synthetic marijuana with him so he was arrested for family violence, resisting arrest and recovered narcotics.”
The minor was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center where the Juvenile Probation Department was notified and they requested him to be transported to the Juvenile Detention Center after being cleared by the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.
“The Juvenile Probation Department will be taking care of this case because he’s a minor,” said Schmerber.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, synthetic cannabinoids can cause serious mental and physical health problems such as rapid heart rate, vomiting, violent behavior, and suicidal thoughts.
Despite being known as “synthetic marijuana, the addictive substance is made up of man-made mind-altering chemicals sprayed on dried, shredded plant material or vaporized chemicals that act on the same brain cell receptors as marijuana.
The only parts of synthetic cannabinoid products that are “natural” are the dried plant materials.
Other common names for “synthetic marijuana” are Spice or K2.

La Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Maverick respondió a un incidente en el cual un menor que había usado la sustancia conocida como "marihuana sintética" y que asaltó físicamente a dos de sus familiares.
"Estaba bajo la influencia, agredió físicamente a su hermano y hermana, y ambos querían presentar cargos", dijo el Sheriff Tom Schmerber. "Traía marihuana, por lo que fue arrestado por violencia familiar, resistiendo el arresto y recuperado narcóticos".
El menor fue trasladado al Centro de Detención de Tom Bowles, donde se notificó al Departamento de Libertad Condicional Juvenil y le pidieron que fuera transportado al Centro de Detención Juvenil después de ser autorizado por el Centro Médico Regional de Fort Duncan.
"El Departamento de Libertad Condicional Juvenil se ocupará de este caso porque es un menor", dijo Schmerber.
Según el Instituto Nacional sobre el Abuso de Drogas, los cannabinoides sintéticos pueden causar graves problemas de salud mental y física, como la frecuencia cardíaca rápida, vómitos, comportamiento violento y pensamientos suicidas.
A pesar de ser conocida como "marihuana sintética, la sustancia adictiva se compone de sustancias químicas que alteran la mente y que estan hechas rociadas sobre material vegetal seco o triturado o químicos vaporizados que actúan sobre los mismos receptores de células cerebrales que la marihuana.
