
The Eagle Pass High School Eagles lost Friday’s home game against Laredo United South, 34-24.
The Eagles scored first with a drive that finished off with a Ricky Medina run with 6 minutes to go in the first quarter putting them on top early. Jose Riojas capped off the drive with the extra point making it 7-0.
United South countered quickly with a TD of their own 3 minutes later bringing the score to 7-7 before the end of the quarter.
The Laredo defense then stopped the Eagles just as they were in scoring distance with an endzone interception which resulted in a scoring drive of their own. United South took advantage and scored again in the the second quarter putting them up 14-7 with 8 minutes to go before the half.
Jose Riojas once again placed points on the board for the Eagles with a field goal with under 5 minutes remaining in the first half making it 14-10.
United South also tacked on a field goal before the half widening their lead to 17-10 at half time.
In the third quarter the Eagles once again went to work with their powerful running game resulting in a 22 yard touchdown run by QB Ricky Medina. The impressive drive narrowed the United lead and kept the Eagles within striking distance with a score of 24-17 with 5 minutes to go in the third.
Medina once again busted out a much needed run landing them inside the 10 late in the third quarter. On second and goal from the 8, tailback Mark Venegas came through with an 8 yard run tying up the game at 24 with 1:23 left in the third quarter.
With the game on the line the Panthers countered with a 2 yard run for pay dirt early in the fourth making it 31-24. The Panther defense yet again came up big with an interception on the Eagle 49 yard line with only 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute in the game the Panthers once again found themselves in Eagle territory, icing the game with a field goal making the final score 34-24.
The Eagles now prepare for Laredo United next week, who also have a 4-3 record and lost their last game against Southwest, 28-24. The Eagles have a 2-2 district record and a 4-3 overall record.
