A city ordinance that put into effect the increase of many city fees, including bridge tolls, has led to complaints from many, this time about the hike in Parks and Recreation fees.
Parents are complaining that the sudden rise in fees is making things difficult, especially for those who have more than one child to register for activities.
Recreation Supervisor Juan Cuellar said he has explained to those who have called him with concerns that there are reasons for the increase.
“I’ve had parents ask the reason behind this.There’s a couple of reasons.It’s been more than 10 years that the fees have not gone up, and all over the South Texas area, all the different leagues that run, little league, recreation, all of them charge $45 plus to participate,” said Cuellar. “But the main reason we’re going through this is because by November 2018 we should have a new student athletic complex which will provide more opportunities for our kids, more games, and a better gym.”
The $1.3 million project will be built in the area behind Chick-fil-a, will feature bleachers, showers and locker rooms, and is funded by both the fees as well as a grant.
Once, the new building is completed, the old multipurpose will be remodeled.
Cuellar said the new activity center could also be used as a shelter in case of an emergency.
“Imagine if something happens in Eagle Pass where we use the multi-purpose for a shelter, but there’s no shower, there’s no kitchen. That place will have all of that in case the city needs a big area for a shelter,” said Cuellar.
Despite complaints from parents, there are already more than 40 teams registered for the Parks and Recreation basketball league.
“People are complaining but the teams are still registering. I think what helps a lot is the type of service we’ve been offering,” said Cuellar, who added that the department had been working hard to better their staff.
“To tell you the truth this year is the first year so far that there’s no complaints about our officials, or our workers because they do an excellent job, so I think the coaches see that this is a league that there’s honesty, there’s fairness, and the kids are being helped,” said Cuellar. “We try to make sure if something is not going right, our officials help out: ‘I’m calling this foul because of this, or I’m calling this flag because of that.’ We explain. It’s a process that we slowly started to change the last two years and now we’re at a point where our officials are very comfortable with our coaches and our coaches are very comfortable with our officials.”
Cuellar also commented on the Fitness in the Park event the city has been planning, and said they will hopefully host the first outdoor family friendly exercise class before Thanksgiving, with an outdoor movie night to follow in December.
