The Candles For Life Organization was able to raise $40,635.85 at their 2016 event.
Approximately 958 luminaries were made in honor of those fighting and those who lost their lives to cancer.
Funds were raised through several events held throughout Candles for Life’s first ever day long event that included a motorcycle ride that brought in approximately $900, a car show that brought in over $1,000, the walk-a-thon and a concert.
Cancer survivor and President of Candles for Life Becky Robinson said the event made approximately $20,000 more than last year, a long way from the $5,000 in donations they first started out with. The increase in donations was a big help, especially as the organization sees more applicants asking for help.
“Last year, we really struggled to get the fundraising to come in with the walk, so that was kind of our main focus this year, making sure we had enough money to cover all the expenses we had as far as the awards we were giving to the cancer patients,” said Robinson. “One of the things that we noticed was that there’s just a lot more applicants coming in, so we’re going from 85 applicants to about 100 applicants, and probably a little more at the end of the year, so that was our big push.”
Robinson said once expenses are paid, they will be left with approximately $34,000 to donate to local cancer patients.
The event could not have been so successful without the help of the community, said Robinson, who added that they even had people come in and buy the extra beverages that were left over so that the organization would not incur a loss.
“We’d love to thank all the sponsors and everybody in general that just stepped in from the community. They’ve really embraced us and this event and we thank everybody for it, especially the cancer patients and their families,” said Robinson. “Whatever we made it’s going right back to them. We really thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.”
