At approximately 5:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, Eagle Pass Police and Fire Departments responded to an incident at a home on Hillcrest Blvd.
A 45-year-old man whose identity has not yet been released, had set several fires in his mother’s home, which EPFD quickly put out.
The man remained locked in the house for a little over an hour, while a large police presence was outside of the home, including SWAT. The area was closed off to traffic during the time that police, who were in communication with the suspect while he was inside the house, attempted to negotiate his surrender.
After police were able to convince the subject to come outside, he was placed under arrest. The suspect stated that he was armed, but was not in possession of any weapons at the time of his surrender, said EPPD Chief Alberto Guajardo.
“The lieutenants were there, the special operations team was there, and of course Chief Mello and his staff were there. It was a bad situation, but fortunately we had a good outcome,” said Guajardo. “The lieutenants were able to talk him through the situation. He was a subject suffering from mental illness and drug use, and that’s why we kind of kept it low key because we didn’t know what his reaction would be when we put attention on him in this matter, but we took him into custody without incident.”
Some officers suffered smoke inhalation, but were treated at the scene.
Guajardo wishes to thank the police administration for the outcome of the event.
“It could’ve gone bad,” said Guajardo.
The subject is currently under medical treatment for mental illness and was evaluated the evening of the incident.

Aproximadamente a las 5p.m. del martes, policias y bomberos respondieron a un incidente en una casa en Hillcrest Blvd.
Un hombre de 45 años , cuya identidad no se ha publicado todavía, había hecho varios incendios en el domicilio de su madre, que EPFD respondió rápidamente. Sin embargo, el hombre se quedó encerrado en la casa por un poco más de una hora, mientras que una gran presencia policial estaba fuera de la casa, incluyendo el SWAT.
El área fue cerrada al tráfico durante el tiempo que la policía estaban en comunicación con el sospechoso mientras estaba dentro de la casa y que intentaban negociar para que se entregara.
Después de que los policía fueron capaces de convencer al sujeto a salir al exterior, fue puesto bajo arresto. El sospechoso dijo que estaba armado, pero no estaba en posesión de ningun arma en el momento de su entrega, dijo el jefe de EPPD Alberto Guajardo.
"Los tenientes estaban allí, el equipo de operaciones especiales estaba allí, y por supuesto jefe de Mello y su personal tambien estaban al tanto en todo momento. Fue una mala situación, pero afortunadamente tuvimos un buen resultado", dijo Guajardo. “Los tenientes eran capaces de hablar con él a través de la situación. Era un caso de enfermedad mental y consumo de drogas, y estaban preparados porque no sabíamos lo que podia ser su reacción , pero lo tomamos en custodia sin el incidente”.
Algunos oficiales sufrieron inhalación de humo, pero fueron atendidos en el lugar.
